Composite Decking Boards Over Membrane: Essential Information

Installing any surface including composite decking boards over membrane is in most cases a costly exercise.  Furthermore, it is one of those jobs where, if not done properly, things can easily go from good to bad to worse.  With the ever rising interest in extending our living spaces outdoors, and increasing architectural trends such as roof terraces, it is becoming more common to build decks and patios over membrane.  If this is something you are considering, or about to work on, there are several factors to consider to make sure you only have to do the job once, by doing it right first time round!  This short blog article will provide some information you need to know before starting and will use composite decking boards as an example.

Ensure Sufficient Airflow

To reduce the impact of moisture in creating mould and mildew on the composite decking boards, sufficient airflow is important.  12mm clearance around the perimeter of the deck should provide the ventilation needed.  The QwickBuild aluminium subframefor decking, exterior tiles, and artificial turf is also the perfect solution for preventing moisture damage.  This includes a unique QwickGrate design which facilitates more circulation of air beneath the surface.

Enable Access to Gutters and Downpipes

It is important to ensure that any surface installed over membrane can be removed easily to provide access to gutters and downpipes.  This may be required to remove debris or to deal with any blockages.  QwickBuild allows easy access through its concealed clip system which means no nails or screws are required to fix the boards to the frame.  Therefore, composite decking boards can easily lifted if required without causing unnecessary damage and replacements.

Ensure the Membrane can be Inspected

Traditional timber decking can become water logged and heavy meaning that they could be difficult to lift and remove should a membrane inspection be necessary.  Composite decking boards are much more water resistant.  In fact, our ResortDeck composite decking boards have a water absorption rate of just 0.1%.  This, along with QwickBuild’s concealed clip and QwickGrate systems, make our products and designs the perfect solution for easy membrane inspection.

The Substructure that sits upon the Membrane Must be Durable

A decking or patio substructure should provide a stable framework to support the flooring solution whether this be composite decking boards or tiles.  Timber joists may prove to be a poor choice for contructing the subframe as they may not hold shape which may lead to an unstable surface.  Using timber for the subframe may also null any guarantees provided by a membrane manufacturer.  The aluminium QwickBuild subframe offers vastly superior durability and stability through the use of 100% moisture resistant materials.  The made-to-measure prefabricated frames are manufactured from corrosion resistant making grade anodised structural aluminium joists and bearers.   This results results in a perfectly straight, rigid, and stable structure for composite decking boards or other flooring solutions.
